EYE SURGERY:
During set-up for Talk Story I noticed floating potatoes with halos on the outside of my right eye. I went to see the optometrist, and had surgery to repair detaching retina. I was off work and off the tour (below) on all neighbor islands (cannot fly). The other tellers filled in.

Four disturbed storytellers GIFTED at making skin crawl meet. “Tita’ Kathy Collins (Maui’s Mana’o Radio DJ), Lopaka Kapanui (Oahu ghost tours), Cathy Spagnoli (Seattle Asian tale specialist) with piano improv wizard Les Adam. Kids under 13 NOT invited. Over 100 paid/attended. They want to do it again.

@ Iao Theater (Wailuku, Maui)FREE. 100 CANDLES! A Japanese tradition says that if you blow out one of 100 candles after each ghost story, when it’s finally all dark you’ll see ghosts. We’ll put this belief to a test. This GHOST OPEN MIC takes hours. $10, $5 rebate for telling. 4 ghost tellers host. 50ish people attended

3rd Annual ‘OBAKE OAHU’ @ Japanese CulturalCenter, 2454 S. Beretania (mauka of Star Market) 4th Floor Ballroom (‘Tita’ Collins, Spagnoli, Gere (first time performing after surgery), Kapanui) $3 fee. Last year it was so popular they turned 200 people away, so they reserved the whole Ballroom. Not as many people came (about 200 did attend)

@ The Contemporary Museum (Honolulu) - Drama & Art! 10:30-noon, (526-1322 x30) Learn to make your own shadow puppet and then stage a story through the art of shadow puppetry. This unique expression session will take place in the David Hockney installation, also known as ‘The Magical Red Forest’. Jeff Gere will inspire and coach story and puppet creation.

the retina re-detached in my right eye (too much active storytelling too soon?). The second surgery took place on Nov. 3rd.(cannot fly so I had to cancel the Los Angeles Storytelling Festival where I was scheduled to perform Nov. 15)
